Troubleshooting: ------------ If you get a message that the path is too long, then you should move Noctis to c:\noctis or c:\games\noctis, or something like that. My Documents and the Desktop both have very long paths ('c:\Documents and Settings\your user name\Desktop', for instance). ------------ If you are using Windows 95, 98, or ME, NICE may or may not work for you. If it doesn't work for you, there isn't much we can do about it. It'll be more likely to work if you use Normal or Alternate Go (instead of using Old Go or running Noctis.exe directly). If Normal Go! doesn't work because you don't have enough conventional memory (Possibly on Win95/98/ME), you can try running Alternate Go! instead. If that STILL doesn't work, you're probably out of luck. You can try running "Old GO!.exe", but that probably won't work either. If it won't work, you might look for help on the Noctis forum of http://www.anywherebb.com (but there might not be anything we can do to help right now) ------------ If you can't see any guide entries when you use CAT or CAST or the other GOES guide commands, THIS IS NOT A BUG: It's because to fix several bugs, terrain generation had to be changed (and we improved it too), which invalidated most of the old guide comments. So, the guide was cleared for NICE R9 and newer. The starmap was NOT cleared (although it has been converted to a new format). You can still access the old guide and starmap, however: Add OLD before the name of the command you're trying to use. For instance, 'OLDCAT FELYSIA' instead of 'CAT FELYSIA'. You can still send outboxes and get inboxes, but you use Sync-Starmap (SyncStarmap.exe) to do it. See the manual in the docs folder for more information. ------------ If you can't run any modules, or you're getting an "(UNKNOWN MODULE)" error when you try to use a GOES module from the GOES console, there are a number of things that could be causing that: 1. The modules might be missing. Make sure they exist and are in the noctis\modules folder (For example, you should see cast.exe in that folder, that's the CAST module). 2. Or you might have extracted the zip without keeping folders - all the files from the zip would wind up in one folder with no subfolders then. This is pretty rare, though, most modern zip-file handling programs handle folders automatically. 3. NICE might not have enough memory to run any GOES modules. There isn't much that can be done about this currently. If this were the case, you should see this message on the GOES console: "Not enough memory is available to execute command; or available memory has been corrupted; or invalid block exists, indicating that process making call was not allocated properly." 4. NICE can't find the command interpreter (command.com or cmd.exe). If it were deleted, disabled, or renamed, this would probably happen. If you have a windows CD, you could try to get the file from it. Alternately, you could reinstall windows. Note that if you had this problem, you probably wouldn't be able to play any DOS games at all, so it should be fairly obvious. * #4 could also happen if you had erased or messed up the PATH environment variable. 5. Alternately, the command interpreter program may have been corrupted, in which case you'll see this message on the GOES console "Command-interpreter file has invalid format and is not executable." 6. It probably shouldn't be possible to get the "Argument list is too big" error, but if you do get that error, please let us know (on the Noctis forums at http://anywherebb.com) what you were trying to do when you got that error. 7. If something went wrong, but NICE doesn't know what went wrong, it'll say "System call didn't work, but we don't know why. Error number is [number]." You should let us know if this happens. ------------ -SL
